Gate, or also known as Gate: The Self-Defense Forces Fight Like This in English, is a Japanese light novel series written by Takumi Yanai. Its anime adaptation was produced through Studio A-1 Pictures and directed by Takahiko Kyōgoku.
The story takes place in Tokyo, where the Special Defense Force headquarter has been breached from another world. In this world exists a gate that connects Earth to an unknown world. In order to investigate the other side of the Gate, the Special Defense forces have been divided into two groups which are intelligence division and technology division. Each group has seen different things from the other side of the door when they entered the gate and now must figure out how to survive in this new world with war raging on.
The story of “Gate” begins with the Special Forces sneaking into Japan through the “Gate” before it was known to the public. After which, more monster appearances (Chimera) has been happening all over Tokyo. This anime follows Itami Youji and his team as they investigate the Gate and their situation. It was later on known that creatures from the other side of the Gate are coming into our world where one of them is a person, named Princess Pina Co Lada who surprisingly looks like Japanese girl.
While this may seem all fun and games, Japan now has to contend with these new enemies which they have never seen before. Will Japan survive? What is even more surprising is how they will be able to co-exist with another intelligent race!
1. Itami Youji
He is the protagonist of Gate – Thus the JSDF Fought There! and a Senior Lieutenant in the Ground Self-Defense Force. Team lead of the Third Recon Team.
An online otaku who enjoys reading doujinshi and novels on the internet. His job is simply something that allows him to fund his hobbies.
2. Pina Co Lada
She is the Emperor’s daughter, and she mediates between Japan and the empire. She has been working to defend her nation since she recognized the Empire’s military strength deficit with respect to Japan.
She was exposed to the otaku culture after meeting Itami, and she was greatly influenced by it. She is also credited with establishing the “Rose Order of Knights.”
3. Lelei La Lelena
She is the human species’ sages and sorceresses. Cato the Elder’s Second Disciple.
She is a knowledgeable individual with outstanding abilities, but she rarely displays passion. She has a tiny build, which makes her seem younger than she actually is.
4. Rory Mercury
She is a demigoddess and an Emroyan apostle, the god of battle, bloodshed, and death. Despite her ancient age, she has the appearance of a 13-year-old.
Rory has a kind disposition, as demonstrated when she instantly made friends with Youji Itami and began to sit on his knee. She does, however, show no mercy to her foes, as seen when she murdered a group of robbers without any hesitation.
5. Tuka Luna Marceau
She appears to be somewhere between 16 and 17 years old, despite her apparent age.
She is an elf from a superior race with blonde hair and blue eyes who had been living in Kowan with her father. The village was wiped out by the rampage of an old dragon, leaving only she among the survivors.
